SWE4 Information

This is a small module based around the DS2413 IC which provides two inputs or outputs.

As well as the DS2413 IC the SWE4 has four resistors, four diodes, a capacitor, two transistors and various connectors.

The PCB is 55x60mm. The RJ45 sockets overhang by around 1mm. The module is 20mm high. There are 3mm mounting holes 3mm in from each corner which gives them spacings of 49x54mm.

It allows connection to your 1-Wire network via either the RJ45 connector or screw terminals. The RJ45 connector is wired to the same standard pinout as all our modules (see here for details). This module only uses pins 1, 2, 4 and 5. Pins 3, 6, 7 and 8 are linked from CN1 to CN2 but not used by the module. Pins 1 and 5 (power ground and 1-Wire ground) are connected together within the module.

Each channel can either be used as a switch input or an active low output (20mA max) or 5V active high output (up to 500mA if your 1-Wire bus can supply it).

If you are using the SWE4 for inputs or for active low outputs it will run parasitically from the 1-Wire bus. If you intend to use the 5V output you will need to provide power. If you are using one of our RPI2 or RPI3 host adapters then you will already have power on the bus (but be careful not to overload it). If you are using a master that does not provide power, or you wish to draw higher currents you can use one of our SWE5 power injectors to feed power into your network.

As of version 1.1 (which started shipping around May 2014) the module also features a jumper that allows selection of external or parasitic power. This does not affect the power for the DS2413 IC (as it always works in parasitic mode) or the active high outputs (which always require external power). What it does do is determine where the source of power for the pull up resistors (R1 and R2) for the two I/O channels on the DS2413 comes from. The previous versions had this hard wired to parasitic mode but in testing on the bench we found that there were some configurations where this caused problems when the module was used for outputs where a change of state of one output would briefly cause instability in the other output. So if you have power available on your network you now have the option of moving the jumper to external power instead to ensure this problem does not occur.

We're also now selling a relay module that will work well with the SWE4 and allow you to switch loads of up to 10A at 230V. Please see the Software / Wiring page for details on how to connect this module.
